The Genesis Energy Season of Verdi's Macbeth, one of the greatest operas Shakespeare’s work has inspired, is on in Wellington at the St James Theatre from 9-16 October 2010
Verdi perfectly captures the bleak tragedy of Shakespeare’s most potent work in his operatic adaptation of Macbeth – the classic tale of ambition, corruption and bloody revenge.
Macbeth's obsession with gaining the throne consumes him entirely so that by the time of his wife's marvelously mad demise, in Act IV, it barely registers in his head. He is in love all right, but it does not make for a happy ending.
